As the breeze brushes against my face on this warm Labor Day evening in the Bay Area, I start to wonder why many consider basketball their least favorite fantasy sport among the big three.
Nothing compares to football because you can be champ of your league by only visiting it once a week. Convenience wins here.
Why baseball?
- It was the original.
- The numbers have always taken a front seat in the statistics world in part because there are more of them to crunch.
- Fantasy combines two very different elements—pitchers and hitters.
- In addition, the player universe is much larger (not counting the minor leagues).
The bottom line is fantasy b-ball doesn’t bring anything special other than the actual game—basketball—invented here in the late nineteenth century and, next to soccer, the second most popular sport overseas. All it takes to play is a cut open milk crate and a round ball.
While not being as quick as football or as slow as baseball, the game constantly gives you something to watch. Points must be scored within 24 seconds and you don’t need to cross a plate or a goal line to do it.
However, it isn't America’s past time. Nor are the finals a once-a-year event in which women who are clueless about the sport go to parties where they talk all through the game and hush you during the commercials. Thus in the States the game takes a back seat.
